This is the first podcast in a new project I am doing called “Wondering to Work.” (@wonderingtowork on instagram and twitter)
I wonder about a lot of things on the way to work and I am in my car… and I have a phone, so I thought I would just record some thoughts on some things I wonder about!
This episode is on Luck and Self-Fulfilling Prophecy!
“We’re all stories in the end, just make it a good one.” It’s interesting to go right into a subject that many want to attribute to unseen forces or totally within one’s grasp. In my prayerful life, I felt my “luck” (and for a time in my life, I banned that word and only used “blessing”), was attributed to God leading me or gifting me. Then I purposefully avoided talking to God in any manner….and my life changed little. Amazing people still drifted into my life. I still, in my “fix-it” mentality threw all my woesome friends and family on my back and worked to drag them out of their pits of despair…. perhaps the only thing that did change, was I sometimes learned to give up. I didn’t pray for them anymore. Those who chose perpetual glass half empty talk, I left to finish off their bitter brew, while I went to refill my own mug with butterbeer (cuz yum!!!). It honestly grieves me to allow continual Eeeyores in my social circle, but I know that is mostly my issue (ever seen that Disney movie “Inside Out”? Yeah, I’m generally Joy….even had the short blue hair for a time). My spouse is a good balance to my exuberance that can border on a peppy persistence that resembles peppy pestilence. And I, over time edged him (don’t read nagging into that….., well okay yeah…wifely duties includes nagging) toward a slightly rosier set of Ray Bans. In our children I see the ones who tend toward one side of the luck see-saw vs. the unlucky others. We try to discuss it, sometimes outright call it out and I think for the most part we don’t have anyone who doesn’t call the number on the side of the truck (wait, no! They can’t call that!!! Kidnappers!!!!). I wonder how many “unlucky” sorts have upbringings with a Golden sibling? One of our kids is definitely a Midas and we honestly kinda tease him about it. In a total effort to somewhat diffuse any bitterness held by the siblings who put the same effort or more into something and take home the blue ribbon fewer times. I actually have a very specific story about that and it would be interesting to redress that time with the kids and see what they think has happened in life since then…. but since I’ve rambled on excessively already…I’ll just add one summary thought. Making your story, I believe there is much to it (cause I feel lucky, punk!) and I’ve always loved the quote I included at the beginning. From Doctor Who, duh! Isn’t all the good life quotes from sci-fi???
